Our Story

Inspired by the tradition of Italian neighbourhood haunts, Pizzicotto is the lively sister restaurant to the 50 year old Kensington gem ‘Il Portico’. A local Pizzeria and Osteria where the humble pizza & neighbourhood cuisine is reimagined & the tradition of cooking over wood is celebrated.

Like Il Portico there is heavy emphasis on the ‘Terra Madre’ of Emilia Romagna with a tight network of small scale & artisanal food producers from the region supplying the restaurant exclusively and directly. On any given day you can find organic charcuterie produced by the same family for over 235 years, rare breed & wild produce, unfiltered & artisanal beers, Chianina beef, & daily handmade pasta. Our Pizze are made exclusively with stone ground, organic flour from a mill from the Apennine mountains, & proofed for a full 72 hours ensuring a complex, light, and delectable base. All before wood firing at 400 degrees.

Pizzicotto is delighted to be a part of Slow Food in the UK. Slow Food promotes a better way to eat through biodiversity by linking the pleasure of food with a commitment to the community and the environment.

We proudly import all of our organic ingredients directly from small producers in Italy, without wholesale distributors.

Il Portico

Il Portico is the (much older) sister restaurant of Pizzicotto and you’ll find us just 5 doors away. Opened in the 1960s by Pino Chiavarini, Il Portico is still managed to this day by the same family. James, Marianna and Francesca Chiavarini are always on hand to welcome you whilst our chef Eduardo (currently in his 28th year of service with us) concentrates on dishes with a sense of tradition and history.

Il Portico offers simple, authentic Italian food, drawing heavily from classic flavours from the family’s home region of Emilia Romagna. This is a region famous for its fast cars and slow food, home to Bologna, Modena, and Parma. Italians don’t agree on much, but they are unanimous in acknowledging the region as having the finest food.
